CALL FOR READERS
Su’pay is Bikol for “overflow,” an apt title for a literary forum/poetry reading/artist interaction. What we wish to do is to gather what overflows from each of us out of our experience of life in its ebbs and flows, in its moments of grandeur, in its moments of despair. This is part of our efforts to reach out and be one with the other- nagsusuru’pay na lindok. We overflow with our passion for connections because we realize that we are woven of the same thread, are warp and woof of the same fabric. Let this fabric enfold us now so we can gather and feel only warmth – warmth that will further energize our drive to write another verse, another song, or wrap in metaphor our yearning for love, peace, and justice, or perhaps, simply for a smile from a friend.
This is the idea from which came the now yearly event since 2002 that gathers the literati/culturati of the university and of the region; to provide a venue for the exchange of verses, and exchange of stories; a sharing of melodies; to catch the overflow! The activity is a poetry reading/performance and storytelling, mixed with singing and interaction.
Su’pay 2009 will be extra special because it is meant as a celebration of triumphs won by Bikol writers. To mention only two: this year Kristian Cordero was given the NCCA Literary Prize for poetry and Vic Nierva for the 2008 National Book Award in the poetry category for his book Antisipasyon.
Su’pay 2009 will be held on January 23, 2009 (5:45-9:30 p.m.) at the St. Pius V Hall of Aquinas University (Rawis Campus)
We are inviting Bikol writers to read their poems or short excerpts of long poems and/or fiction, or to present new works-in-progress. Pieces may be in Filipino, English or another language, but preferably in Bikol (any of the Bikol variants) and no longer that two-pages (double-spaced, font size 12 Times New Roman). Please send us the pieces to be read on or before 18th January 2009 by email (with “Su’pay” on the subject line) to: email@example.com or by post to the address below. Please include a short bio or background information about you, your address and occupation, you organizational/work affiliation. We will send back an invitation to Su’pay 2009. Please confirm your participation by 20th January 2009.
A vehicle will be available for participants from Naga/Camarines Sur and those from Sorsogon, but with limited slots only, so we encourage early confirmation.
