CCP launches 35th issue of Ani publication


11 November 2009, Pasay City – The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Literary Arts Division will launch Ani 35, The Pinoy as Asian issue, on November 26, 2009, 6:00 p.m., at the CCP Ramp with some of the featured authors reading from their works.

“Ani 35 is devoted to writings by Filipinos on their interaction with other Asian peoples and cultures. This may be interpreted as a response to the call of Dr. Bienvenido Lumbera, National Artist, on the need to reconnect with Southeast Asian literary tradition if we are to survive in this age of globalization,” Herminio S. Beltran, Jr., Literary Arts Division chief and editor of the publication, wrote in the Introduction. “We hope this will inspire the birthing of mechanisms and eventually practices in the Philippine literary/publishing world that will start off a more dynamic interaction among Filipino writers and their counterparts in the Asian continent,” Beltran continued.

Ani 35 features 54 authors who contributed for three sections: poetry; prose (essay and fiction) based on the The Pinoy as Asian theme and; Malayang Haraya for poetry and prose contributions outside the theme.

Winners of 2008 NCCA Writers Prize Bared
Five Filipino writers will be awarded cash to be able to finish their projects in fiction, essay, biography and poetry by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), led by its chairman Dr. Vilma Labrador and executive director Cecile Guidote Alvarez, through its 2007 NCCA Writers’ Prize, one of the country’s top literary awards.

Ed Maranan, Elyrah Loyola Salanga, Telesforo Sungkit, Jr., Kristian Sendon Cordero and Rosario Cruz-Lucero will be honored with a trophy, a certificate and the first tranche of P50,000 each at the awarding ceremony on July 25, 2008, at the lobby of the NCCA Building in Intramuros at 6 p.m.

In the essay in English category, Maranan’s The Country in the Heart: A Writer’s Times and Travels is chosen. He is a veteran fictionist, poet, activist and teacher.

A professor at the University of the Philippines, 28-year-old Elyrah Loyola Salanga wins in the literary biography category. Her project, Alfrredo Navarro Salanga: Sa Mga Pahina at Ibang Salaysay, will tell about his father, the great late writer Alfrredo Navarro Salanga. Elyrah has already won a Carlos Palanca Award for essay in 2006.

In the novel in Cebuano category, the prize goes to Telesforo Sungkit, Jr., who is now based in Laguna but hails from Bukidnon, for his project Mga Gapnod sa Kamad-an.

Kristian S. Cordero wins in the poetry in Bicolano category for his project Segunda Mano. Hailing from Iriga City, Cordero teaches at the Ateneo de Naga University, is author of two collections of poetry and has won several awards including a Palanca Award for short story and the Madrigal-Gonzales Best First Book Award in 2006.

Rosario Cruz-Lucero, prominent writer, critic, professor at the University of the Philippines and Palanca awardee, wins in the short story in English category for her Papa’s Field and Other Stories of the Disappeared.

There are no winners in the drama category in any of the Panay languages.

The winners will be given a grant of P250,000.00 gross each to assist them during the writing stage of the project and will be given in four tranches. The grant is good for one year, after which a manuscript of the writing project will be submitted to the NCCA for possible publication.

The biennial award was spearheaded by National Artist for Literature Virgilio Almario when he was executive director of the NCCA. This is in line with NCCA’s mission to “encourage the continuing development of a pluralistic culture by the people themselves,” will be creating the opportunity to have a direct hand in the development of Filipino literature. With this grant, the NCCA Writers’ Prize, writers will be freed from the demands of their work and shall be able to focus on the writing of the project for one year.

For the awarding ceremony on July 25, Dr. Ricardo de Ungria, commissioner of the Subcommission on the Arts and head of the Committee on Literary Arts, will be the guest speaker. The NCCA is at the 635 General Luna Street, Intramuros, Manila.

Folk Poetry and Music at Plaza Quezon

Before the advent of malls and fast food chains, the plazas held greater importance to the public life of the people. And it is in this line of thought that the local government of Naga through its Committee for Culture and Arts headed by Councilor Badette Roco organized a three month-long programs aptly called as ‘Arts in the Heart of Bicol’ that featured different cultural groups in the city and nearby towns. The program aims to promote the cultural vibrancy of the city and to bring to the larger populace the local artists who strive to keep the strong artistic traditions in Bikol through their music, thespian talents, and creative writings

Last April 17, 2008, another cultural show was held at the plaza which featured the Kaiba Ka, Ateneo de Naga Chorale, Pili Dramatics Guild, the Bikol Express (a group that produces documentary films on Bikol) and the members of the Kabulig-Writers Group.

Composed of award winning and published writers which include Carlos Arejola, Vic Nierva, Rizaldy Manrique, Estelito Jacob, Boboy Aguay, Judith Salamat, Jo Bisuña, Aida Cirujales, Issa Casillan and Kristian Cordero, the writers read their rawitdawit (poetry) and recited tigsik (an indigenous folk poetry) to the delight of the audience who crowded the place.

Dubbed as Kantaramon 2, the said cultural event is the second activity sponsored by the Kabulig that celebrates its 15th founding anniversary this year. Among the first members of Kabulig are Frank Peñones, Vice Mayor Gabby Bordado and Honesto Pesimo Jr., who continue to write and support the activities of the literary group. Other active members of the group are based in Albay, Manila and abroad like Abdon Balde Jr., Marne Kilates, Merlinda Bobis, Paz Verdades Santos, Luis Cabalquinto and Gode Calleja.

UP Professor-Emeritus Maria Lilia F. Realubit, one of pioneering scholars on Bikol studies also graced the occasion together with students and faculty and representatives from the business sector and the local government of Naga. After the poetry reading and the musical numbers performed by the Kaiba Ka, the Bikol Express showed their documentary feature on the island town of Rapu-Rapu. The cultural activity was seen live on air via the SkyCable.

Si Sonny Villafania, ang awtor ng tampok na aklat ang pangunahing tagapagtaguyod ng panitikan at panulaan ng Pangasinan. Ang Maligilion ay ang kanyang ikalawang koleksiyon ng mga tula.

Villafania’s poetry book launched

The latest Pangasinan collection of poems by Santiago B. Villafania was launched at Urdaneta City on Friday, November 9.

Malagilion: Sonnets tan Villanelles is Villafania’s second collection of poems in Pangasinan language which was launched shortly after the 2-day Conference on “Revitalizing the Pangasinan Language and Cultural Heritage” held at the Urdaneta City Sports and Cultural Center last November 8-9, 2007.

The 390-page book includes some 300 sonnets and 50 villanelles, published through grants from the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) and Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) under the helm of Dr. Jose Paulo E. Campos.

The new collection of verses is an uplifting exploration of memories of childhood, love, history, current events, the wonders of nature, and the enrichment of the Pangasinan language, culture and literature.

KWF Chair Dr. Ricardo Ma. Duran Nolasco and UP Professor Dr. Ma. Crisanta Nelmida-Flores wrote the preface and the introduction to the book, respectively. Dr. Cirilo F. Bautista, Victor Emmanuel Carmelo D. Nadera Jr., Aurelio S. Agcaoili, Kristian S. Cordero, Jose Jason L. Chancoco, Christopher Q. Gozum, Jaime P. Lucas, Leonarda “Amor Cico” Carrera, Sergio A. Bumadilla and Melchor E. Orpilla contributed their respective blurbs.

Multi-award winning poet Cirilo F. Bautista says of the author, “Villafania is the leading poet of his generation in Pangasinan today.”

Other works of this young Pangasinan poet include Pinabli tan arum ni’ran Anlong (2003) and a chapbook, Balikas na Caboloan (NCCA, 2005). Some of his poems have appeared in local and international print and web publications such as Balon Silew, AWARD, Philippines Free Press, Philippine Graphic, ANI, Philippine Panorama, Sunday Times Magazine, The Heron’s Nest, HaikuHut’s Short Stuff, Ygdrasil, In Our Own Words 1 & 2, Picolata Review, MindFire, and other online poetry journals.

Born in Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan in 1971, Villafania graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Pangasinan in 1991. “Sonny” as he is fondly called is an active member of the Ulupan na Pansiansia’y Salitan Pangasinan and an ardent advocate for the revival of Pangasinan as a literary language.

Villafania is currently a senior web developer/designer in Emilio Aguinaldo College – Manila.
